Sherry Sweet Tewell is a local Key West artist. Originally from the bluegrass
state of Kentucky, she visited Key West for twenty years before deciding to make it her home. A graduate from Western
Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts/Commercial Art degree Sherry has been working for the past fifteen years
as a muralist, decorative artist and textile designer. She currently has a studio with The Studios of Key West.
Her mural works include numerous large scale commercial
and residential projects. Her most recognizable mural in Key West is located on the exterior wall of the former Wave Gallery
at the corner of White and Virginia Streets. Sherry also recently completed a large scale underwater mural scene at the entrance
to Key West’s Old Town. The 40' x 10' high mural is located at the corner of Truman Avenue and Eisenhower Street.
“My challenge as a muralist has been to convey an idea in a large space realistically so that
the image communicates fifty feet away. My paintings are a complete departure from that. They are abstract and experimental
on small canvases to be viewed intimately and personally.”
“I’m inspired by the intensity of light and color that is so abundant in the Keys. The
landscapes and seascape with the brilliant greens and blues accented with punches of vibrant reds, magenta, and yellows
resonates from my pallet and canvases.”
